Re: Expanding universe

Things get really messy when you consider that the earth rotates and move through space quite fast too. Inertial reference frames still freak me out and I have a hard time with them. I'm trying to learn this stuff at work. I'm not dealing specifically with them as an intern, but the department I'm ...

Re: Expanding universe

Suppose we have a elastic strap anchored somewhere. There are 2 marks on it - the first one is 1 inch from the anchor point, and the second one is 10 inches from the anchor point. When we stretch the strap, consider how far the 1st mark travels from the anchor point. Now consider how far the 2nd mar...

Re: The What's Cooking Thread

Here is a breakfast item that takes about 10 minutes with enough heat applied...

1 English muffin (toasted)
3 strips of bacon
1 hash-brown patty
1 slice of cheese (pepper jack)
1 egg
salt & pepper to taste

Re: Hole on a stick aims to reinvent the desktop fan

Well it isn't anything special really. The fan is hidden inside of the 'stick'. The hoop is hollow, so the stick sucks air up from the base of the stick and puts it into the hoop. There are slots in the hoop for the air to escape from. Dyson just took the part where kids can stick their fingers and ...

Re: Hole on a stick aims to reinvent the desktop fan

Well, it looks like future generations will miss out on the fun of making strange noises into the face of a fan...cough it up to another casualty in the name of safety, and now anti-chunky air. I can't imagine it being quieter than a normal fan, which would be about the only thing I'm interested in ...

Re: The What's Cooking Thread

That stuff was supposed to be tea - just a sample pack I picked up that had a half dozen flavors. By the end of this week I'm trying to get a BBQ Pulled Beef Sandwich thing going in the crock pot. I think pork is more the norm for this type of sandwich (as is cooking it in a smoker), but I'm trying ...

Re: The What's Cooking Thread

Here is another one from my archives... Steak, half a baked potato, asparagus, and shrimp. This probably works out to about $5 in materials since I use bits and pieces of larger packs of items through the week, trying to mix it up a little. I only eat steak/beef about twice a week, but you'd think I...

Re: The What's Cooking Thread

Tonight...I had lots of fresh veggies left over from the slow cooked meal...so I added meat and marinade to produce some sort of stir fry. I later mixed in rice as a second thought to finish this off...

The What's Cooking Thread

If you cook something, post up a photo of it. Slow cooking from a few days ago...simply set it in the morning and return after work: http://files.timaxe.com/forums09/photos_09090377.jpg Note: cook potatoes ahead of time...it took a total of 12 hours on low to get the potatoes right http://files.tima...

Re: Man food (food that'll probably kill ya)

This was from a few weeks ago...I learned a lot from it because it didn't turn out tasting quite the way I wanted it to, lol. Basically I added too much butter and not enough good cheese...I forgot how greasy cheese got when melted. Possibly too much flour also...but I think it was the butter that m...

Re: We Launched A Rocket This Weekend...

Forget SAMs, it's a friggin cruise-missile  Awesome, just awesome... Sounding rockets are basically cheap rocket motors, some of which are military surplus motors. With the multi-stage rockets we drop motors and only recover the payloads / nose-cone. It's cool...we had to wait a few days for...

We Launched A Rocket This Weekend...

I got a call from my dad on Sunday saying that we were in the news. Apparently lots of people noticed Dr. Bernhardt's sounding rocket experiment: noctilucent clouds. I'm only a month into my co-op here, but it's interesting to see how people react to some of the experiments we fly for researchers. h...
