Playing Defcon

Postby Aspman » Wed Oct 04, 2006 2:28 pm

I thought we could put Defcon Q and A here since quite a few of us seem to have bought it.

Q - All my ships get killed quick. How can I stop them getting wacked?

Q2 - Defcon will run off a USB drive (yup slowish but it goes) so I can have a go during my lunch at work. But can I stop the bugger trying to get out the firewall and connecting? i.e. can I get it to be a standalone game?

Ships are an interesting bunch. You want to have your carriers moving in Defcon 5 and Defcon 4 towards enemy coastlines. Battleships are outstanding for defending carriers and subs shouldn't be revealed for MRBM launches until the defenses have been hammered. I'm still getting used to ships so I'll post more when I get it.

Defcon uses ports 5000-5001 although some have reported 5008-5009 so just allow 5000-5010. You can do standalone games by just putting in computer opponents in a single game.
In the world of protection, one thing is for sure: security = 1 / convenience.

mix the ships

remember the mix

I sent 3 subs with a battleship and 2 carriers
1 carrier as anti-sub

kept the 3 battleship 1 sub 2 carrier fleet close to home

put the remaining fleet in between as a reserve

only in the tut natch
but I played a lot of Combat Mission
these games are more like chess than combat

I pulled up some technical stats thing, and it appeared to be pinging out the lan. Which I'd rather it not do. Just wondered if I could make sure the bugger stays quiet when it's running on the network.

My ships keep getting wasted I'll need to try a few more configurations.

Here's a question (and you can all laugh at me, but...):

What is Defcon and how/where do I play?

Now I know what DEFCON is in government talk, so no smart arses!

Mav:
Introversion Software presents its third title, DEFCON, a stunning online multiplayer simulation of global thermonuclear war.
You play the role of a military Commander hidden deep within an Underground bunker. Your mission - to successfully exterminate your enemy's civilian population whilst disabling their ability to attack your own. Start by launching your battleships, subs and bombers in order to decimate your opponent's defences. Scramble together your alliances but remember only one can stand victorious.

Prepare your pre-emptive strike before one of your supposed allies gets the same idea. Choose the perfect moment for betrayal, obliterating your opponents with an apocalyptic thermonuclear barrage, but get it wrong and their devastating counter attack will bring you to your knees!

It's Global Thermonuclear War, and nobody wins. But maybe - just maybe - you can lose the least.
