The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Postby J_K9 » Sat Dec 30, 2006 9:08 pm

I've just bought this game for the Xbox 360 (got it for Christmas) - FUHKING HELL! It's huge! :D

Anyway, I've just started and am having some trouble. I've already got out of the sewers, found out that entering random cities is not a good idea (you get shot at), stealing horses and pickpocketing bags of Imperial Guards gets those little buggers chasing your ass to the end of the earth (and eventually killing you), and that Necromancers are damn hard to defeat :D

I've learnt from my mistakes, but I'm doing a side-mission (the Necromancer one - I have to kill her in a cavern) and I've died the three times I've tried it. How should I go about this? Should I skip the missions I cannot complete now and return to them later, or is there another way I can tackle this one?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! :D

Oh, and if any of you are Oblivion fanatics and/or experts then please PM me your email address or IM account name - I could do with all the help and advice I can get :P Cheers!

hmmm I always found the necro's rather easy. entering the cities should be fine unless you have a bounty on you...in which case next time dont get caught doing whatever it was you were doing! As for side quests I dont think there are any limits so go back when your a little less weedy. What type of char are you playing and how are you playing (roleplaying it or power gaming?). With no mods on you should be able to wander pretty much anywhere without getting pwnt because of the way monster level. Grrr dammit JK you just got me in the mood for it (Oblivion that is). Amazing game *re-installs*

It is an amazing game - I'm scared crapless of the rats though :D Is there any way to kill them before they take at least one bite out of you? And is it safe to eat uncooked rat meat?

I've gone the magic way. I'm a Dark Elf, I was born under the The Mage sign and I made my own class (specialising in the magical areas).

Are you on MSN? ;)

Ahhhh a fellow spell slinger :D I always make my own class. I know what you mean about being scared of rats (although they aint as bad as cliff racers). If you have a weapon out then you can block the first attack but I usally (when surroundings allow) wait until they are just about to attack and strafe round them and set their side on fire. As for eating raw meat, I dont know...I quite often go for the veggie option :D

Set their site on fire? I guess that's a spell I haven't learnt yet? :P

Ok, just managed to kill four Necromancers but I still can't kill Raelynn - she kills me every time :( Well, not only her - her and that stupid zombie which guards her

Any hints? I can't cast fire spells (AFAIK), so at the moment I'm stuck with my 2-damage-committing sword or iron mace! :P Melee against her ftw  lol

To kill animals, best bet is to attack before they see you.

Sneak attacks increase attack damage, so sneak and launch a fireball or an arrow at them, most times they'll fall like a sack o' potatoes.

Also the ingredients are best used for alchemy, but you can eat anything, they just have either good or bad effects.

The better an alchemist you are, the more effects you get out the ingredient.

You should have a default fire spell in your magic list.

Set their site on fire? where did you get that from? I said side...any fire spell will do, oh and after doing so I try to move behind the critter incase my spell doesnt kill them in one.

erm...do you mean you dont have destruction as a major, you dont have any fire spells or you just suck? If you dont have destruction as a major (wont stop you using it but you will have to train it up alot before you get anywhere near a decent success rate) then work out how your going to deal your damage (eg using magic to incapacitate them and then whack them alot etc) whatever suits you best really (I usally go for destruction but its not the only way to cause damage). If you can incapacitate them then go for it. I like to train up on blade regardless of class so I always have something to fall back on, theres nothing worse than running out of magicka mid fight and being defensless for a few seconds. If you dont have any decent offensive spells (they dont have to be fire) then head to the nearest city and grab something. If you just suck then go out into the wild and kill small critters until you are better.

You can also join the arena battles for some fights but they can get hard pretty quick (especially for a mage type char).

As for the zombie if you can dodge it while attacking her then go for that as summoned creatures die with their master.

Like Els said if you can sneak up on them then you will do a ton of damage, although I have never really tried this with spells.

Also set up the quick keys (while in the inventory or magic menu press and hold a number key between 1 and 6 I think the max is, anywho a disc will appear and you can drag equipment or a spell across for quick changes during combat.

Finally once you get to the stage where you can make your own spells go for it. I didnt bother until quite late in the game which meant I was stuck using low damage spells because of my magicka limit.

So I've learnt! An arrow from afar also kills most rats (if you hit them ;))

Can I do that at the moment? I have collected some ingredients on my journey, but I have no idea what to do with them.

Where's my magic list? :?

Oh, and I'm not on Xbox Live yet - need to grab myself a lengthy cat5 to pass from the router under the carpet to the Xbox ;)

Nah - I just suck :D

Ah yes... I know how to get to the disc but I don't know how to get things there... I'm on the Xbox, remember :P

Llama I have a couple of tactics.

Firstly charge the git, block their attack, then attack them with 2 hits, and then block again. A 3rd hit normally results in you being blocked and being wide open to some hits.

Or fire arrows at em from a distance in sneak and if they get closer switch to a sword and shield.

Don't know if my iron shield will block her fire and lightning spells, but I'll try it ;)

Well, I can't do that with Raelynn because she sees me as soon as I open the door, but I've tried doing this before on a rat and zombie, only to find that the zombie began to charge at me (I was in sneak mode and hidden in shadows), as did the rat, and I wasn't allowed to change my weapon because I was "already in combat" even though they couldn't have seen me and I was fleeing for my life :P

The only problem with blocking attacks is you can still get knocked back, whilst the enemy doesnt tend to try and get you in the back when you are fighting multiple enemies this can be very bad. I much prefer to completely dodge attacks where possible, this becomes even more useful agaist enemys that block since you can dodge their attack and get in behind them, then hit them square in the back with your weapon of choice safe in the knowledge that they cant block it and send you backwards. Of course the more you level the block skill the less you will get knocked off by blocking so this is less relevant later on in the game. I tend to play ranged mages so I just get good at running about like a loon while throwing the elements at the enemy.

I have no idea how you would access your spell list on the 360, but it should be selectable when you go into your inventory. It's one of the choices on the bottom row. I'd guess that you'd go to your inventory and then press the "right" button (or move the analog stick right) until you see spells listed. You start off with a fire spell, a cure spell and (if you're a dark elf), a summon guardian spell. Actually, if you're having serious trouble with a particular character, I'd recommend using the summon guardian spell, it's likely to kick the monster's ass. Be careful though since it has a very long cooldown time. Also, rushing spell users and hitting them repeatedly with a sword seems to weaken them quite a bit.

Thanks llama - I'll try the dodging tactic :)

cg - Ah, right! So that's where they are! I'll have a look now, but I know how to get there: by pressing the RB button (equivalent to R2 on the PS). RT allows me to cast a spell, so I'm guessing that all I'll be able to do is switch what spell that button casts? I'll try that summon guardian spell to see if it helps - thanks ;)

Yep, on the PC, it changes what spell you cast when you press the 'C' key on the keyboard.
