*** WARNING *** Long post w/ some expletives
Ok, let's see here...where, oh where, do I start. I'll just number it out as I think of stuff.
1: Well, for the first thing, 'cyber bullying' has been going on since the ancient days of early bbs' and it certainly isn't anything that should be considered "new"...in fact, it goes back far enough to be a number of years over the age of any given person that's been bullied today (aka: before this person was born). I don't feel any real sympathy for any bullying that goes on today because of how it's changed from what I remember. BBS' were simple ways to chat 'online', forums added to it, etc... Now it's a erratic blob of vast ways to "communicate", I can't even guess, and while the net definitely helps countless businesses worldwide to continue anew contracts, emails, you name it, the net is completely overwhelmed from being useful in that manner to being THE tool to put out spam, malware, virii, and providing year by year another gaping crater for the teenagers of today to crash into face first. And as far as the internet being integral to a teen's "social" networking, I'm sorry, but that is so laughable that I can't even laugh. What happened to picking up a regular phone at home and chatting that way? No, it's always gotta be something like "text me" or "call my cell" (which is not even theirs, mommy and daddy bought it likely and pay the monthly bill. They get online to look at porn, get on 9 different messaging services (YIM, AIM, ICQ), send text message after text message to God knows how many of their online friends (probably of which half or more of which he/she/it haven't been met because they live 18 states over which is probably a lie like so many other things they put down) and they do this transaction while in church (forced to go by mom & dad), while in some boring event, whatever else comes to mind. Ending touch: today's teenage population (exceptions of course) is nothing more than a weak-ass faded view of the strength of those in the eighties and mid-nineties.
2: 3 out of 4 "teenagers" were "cyber bullied" ???? Are you fucking kidding me?! What the hell is that? First off, they were dicking around either late at night, or all day on their computer (once again, something mommy and daddy bought) so it's no surprise on this. "Oh but it came from s3XXy1...", really? What happened to the provincial authentication where it has to go through you first? So that means it's gotta be someone they know somehow they authenticated previously. As far as forums are concerned, that's a whole new game because there's billions of them and any one of them that you join, so-and-so can start picking on you, making fun of your name, calling you a pussy, threaten to come to your house and cover you with green jello....and do you know why? BECAUSE THERE IS NO PRIVACY ON THE INTERNET! And for those that think parents can do anything about, if they actually KNEW jack about what's REALLY going on when Johnny or Amanda are on their 3ghz dual-core Intel 3gb DDR3 RAM , etc, they could take measures but that's unlikely because Johnny and Amanda have more knowledge than the parents do combined and can barely work an extensive calculator much less a computer.
3: Parents need to just get rid of their computerized machines, get more computer education on them using TODAY'S standards, and force their lackluster kid(s) to do something different...oh...I don't know...chores around the house on a regular basis?....study a hell of a lot more/harder than they certainly did before...things like that. I passed a local group of kids all experimenting with their new-fangled GPS unit and they were trying to get to a place to where it wouldn't be located so I took them on my normal trail which is WAYYYYY down in God-knows-where. Course, all they were wearing was shorts/tshirts/sneakers and one girl was even wearing a tight skirt and I said initially "She shouldn't go because of that skirt" and she smirked at me and said "You know, just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I can't go walking in the woods" and I responded "Sure thing, it's your ruined outfit". Reason for this whole thing? I took them way down to nowhere where we all traversed a small 'cliff' that had lots of limbs to hang on to and ended up in the 'pit'. Not a lot of light down there. They had no signal on the GPS, on any of their cell phones and all got panicky because they're "lost and don't even know which way is north". I just laughed and said "See there, betting it all on electronics...which way is the light coming into here and what angle?". Finally someone got it (80 degrees, north was to his 90 degree right)). Final note: parents need to do these things with their kids so it's a joint-effort and actually looking like a family gathering and a family event. It's like: parents, stop coming home and ignoring your kid(s) and stuffing yourself in front of the tube and do something...kid(s), do something proactive and build self-esteem by doing tougher things, have your social life outside a damned cell phone and a freaking forum board. Sure, use those when needed and wanted but wanted should never be all the damned time.
TO ALL TEENAGERS WHO FEEL GRIEVED AND SCARED BY SOME SCARY THING ON A CELL TEXT MSG OR ON A FORUM
THIS IS NOT "CRY WOLF" - GROW SOME BALLS! I've been made fun of my whole life, even to this day, but you know what? Who the fuck cares? Those that bully or pressure others into some level of submission are the weakest hairless vaginas that couldn't stand up to a real confrontation if they needed to and more than often, when one does arise, they're the first ones to fold.
Until then, get up out of the corner, take of the dress and get some utility combat boots and spec pants/vest outfit and kick the shit outta something. You'll feel better.
