Time for the really freaky thing...

Be warned, strange stuff to follow - weird stuff for which I'm looking for a psychological explanation...

My Grandfather died this morning at 2:30 after a very long bout with Alzheimer's. My family has known this day was coming for quite some time, and we were all prepared for it (having had years to do so), so no condolences are necessary - but it's a big fact in this story.

Ok, so here we go:

I crashed out last night right at halftime in the Dallas Cowboys game, about 9:30 my time, sound asleep using my daily dose of sleeping meds. Usually when I take these I get 8-10 hours sound sleep, and it takes something akin to a level 8 earthquake to wake me prior to that 8 hours. Last night, though, was different. At 2:00 this morning from a dead sleep, I came wide awake, and couldn't fall back asleep. At 2:30 my phone rang with the news telling me of my Grandfather's death. I never got back to sleep last night and I've been wondering about this odd phenomenon all day. Turns out my sister also awakened about 2 this morning.

So is there a sound psychological explanation of this? Why would we, (meaning my elder sister and I) each sleeping at different locations miles apart and miles away from where my Grandfather was being cared for, awaken precisely 30 minutes before his death with no alarms or any prior indication that he was that close to death's door?

Best I can tell it's GOT to be a psychic thing, or a spiritual one; we were both very close to him. But I don't really believe all that psychic stuff, and I'm not overly spiritual - so there's GOT to be some other explanation that's just as valid, and don't bloody say coincidence either; I'm not buying that one either.

In any case, I'm sorry for your loss. Any loss is hard, even if you're well prepared.

You pose an interesting question though...I gave it some thought.

There are some things that can't be scientifically explained, but you have to remember that science has yet to figure out a lot of stuff about the human body. Hell, we just figured out recently what the appendix is for. It's still listed as a vestigial organ in most biology text books. I contend that our subconscious is far more powerful than we give it credit for.

I'd say if you wanted to explain it, there are three options that I can conjure in my imagination:

1. Spiritual forces (God or messengers from God and such)

2. Psychic stuff (our minds are linked on some level we're unaware of)

3. Incredibly perceptive sub-conscious

In the latter thought, the theory is that our subconscious is incredibly perceptive. For example, someone you know saw your grandfather, then you had a conversation with that person later. When that person saw your grandfather, their subconscious calculated his current state and made an estimate of how long he had left. This calculation was far more difficult than our conscious mind could perform with any precision. In the conversation you had later, their tone conveyed this estimate to your subconscious as well. This only works if you know the person really well (in such a case, your subconscious is very attuned to the subtleties of inflection and nonverbal cues of this person). That's my shot at a theory anyway...

Sounds like you had an experience of what twins usually experience, my Mom passed away in 1991 and her twin sister felt it, something akin to feeling light headed and weightless, as well as feeling that something was not right...she then called Grandma and it was confirmed...(nothing violent, an aneurysm while sleeping, my Aunt who is a nurse and moms sister as well said it was like pulling the plug out of the wall, very painless...for which I was grateful)...

Found this interesting link on twins, but could also be informative for others...?

It is a coincidence, despite what you say, but it is synchronicity - a meaningful coincidence.

Carl Jung coined the expression 'synchronicity' for any coincidence that inspires a sense of personal meaning or particular significance in the observer.

I've had several such coincidences personally, hope it's okay to give a link to some of these:
http://www.67notout.com/2010/01/10-coincidence-or-synchronicity.html
An example was when my father's watch stopped at exactly the time when my son was born.

Everything is linked together as you were emotionally to your grandfather.
