MyID.is? Is this a scam or a real service?

Postby rapier57 » Fri Mar 27, 2009 11:54 pm

I just read this on (IN)Secure and have some cognitive dissonance about it.

http://myid.is/

This is supposed to be some kind of certified ID/digital identity system. However, read the steps:

1. First of all remember that we are still in Beta, testing our certification process worldwide and by signing in you’ll be able to certify your digital ID, claim and badge your blog/website and use your certified OpenID url.
2. You’ll be asked to provide your real name and a valid credit card at your personal name.*
3. You’ll need to log on to your bank statement and retrieve the random amount between €2 and €5 that we charged you and then log back on MyID.is to fill it in.**
4. Provide your valid and personal postal address because we’ll send you the last step of your certification process. And then wait for the postman.
5. Follow the instruction on the paper mail and then you’re done.

They're gonna charge you some random amount between 2 and 5 Euros, and you won't know until you get to your credit card statement to see what it is. Then, you have to wait for the postman to bring you a letter that likely tells you you've just given away the farm and to move out, sucker!

Well, a bit of checking and it turns out this is a French outfit. Go figure.
Anyone with more details or inside knowledge of this outfit. Is this real? Is this just one more way to separate a fool from his or her money?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Is there not some sort of fraud that only nabs £1-2 from your card?

Or could it be a way of gathering CC details. Small transaction proves legitimacy of the card. Problem being that that is often normal practice for real businesses.

If it smells fishy.....

I'm ambivalent... The thing that set off my spider-sense is that the FAQ is all but non-existent. I'm also suspicious as to why they'd need €5 rather than the usual €0-1 that Paypal uses to verify your bank account. If nothing else, it sounds like a sneaky way of making money. Additionally, Paypal usually takes some money and gives some back at the same time, so any amount you lose is insignificant. In fact, I seem to remember that when they did it to verify my bank details, I came out a few pence richer.

Cheers,

Yeah, most places I've make 2 random small deposits into your account to verify it.
Some take it back, some let you keep it.

Agreed - I remember PayPal depositing something like 3p and 9p into my account and I had to tell them what the amounts were.

I can't think of any p[ossible reason for MyID to do what they are doing, other than to steal CC info and/or small amounts of money.

Yes, I'm a bit concerned by the approach, too. Of course, as I mentioned before, it is a French outfit. Maybe they will get a bunch of small withdrawals and then surrender?????
