In case you didn't know, the French are celebrating Bastille Day!

When the crowd proved a fair match for the fort's defenders, Governor de Launay, the commander of the Bastille, capitulated and opened the gates to avoid a mutual massacre.


In other words he was out numbered so he surrendered!

Well, there really wasn't anything specific about being outnumbered, there. The quote is: "a fair match for the fort's defenders." Heck, that was probably a half-dozen toothless, angry old ladies.
