Neil Armstrong RIP

Postby Aspman » Mon Aug 27, 2012 11:12 am

Neil Armstrong passed away on Saturday 25th August.

Obama called him a "True American Hero" but I think he was wrong. Neil Armstrong was a global hero to billions a name that really crossed borders without exception.

It's also an absolute credit to the man that unlike so many today he rejected the fame and fortune that was open to him and went back to university to study and then to teach.

Right till the end he was pushing the politicians to keep pushing the envelope of space to keep going higher, and faster.

He was also apparently an uber geek happier to talk engineering theory than the moon landing.

Armstrong's family statement paid the tribute "For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."

I think that's very humble and humbling.
"Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest."

From my tweet on @Rapier57:

Neil Armstrong: the first human to set foot on another world. That will not be forgotten. But, we should not stop there.

So, we should continue to put pressure on governments and NASA to do manned landings on other worlds, establish colonies where we can. Mine the asteroids. All that.

Heck, when I was young, I hoped that I would have an opportunity to be on a manned mission to Mars by the time I was 30 or so. Still, we should be planning to go there--in person, hands-on.

Jayne: Testing. Testing. Captain, can you hear me?
Mal: I'm standing right here.
Jayne: You're coming through good and loud.
Mal: 'Cause I'm standing right here.
