Metal Discovered To Become Transparent Under High Pressure

Postby Egaladeist » Sat Mar 14, 2009 4:36 pm

An international team of scientists have discovered a transparent form of the element sodium (Na). The team, led by Artem Oganov, Professor of Theoretical Crystallography at Stony Brook University, and Yanming Ma, the lead author and professor of physics at Jilin University in China, was able to demonstrate that sodium defies normal physical expectations by going transparent under pressure.

However, as the researchers found, element sodium does just the opposite. A perfect white metal at atmospheric pressure, on increasing pressure sodium first turns black, then (at the pressure of 2 million atmospheres) red transparent, and eventually becomes a colorless transparent material – just like glass.

“This fundamental result is important for understanding properties of highly compressed matter, particularly within stars and giant planets,” said Oganov.

This can't be new, can it? I seem to remember reading about something like this in a Tom Swift book when I was young. Something about high pressure turning some metals transparent. Or, maybe that has always been the theory, and I read it elsewhere, but it is now fact?

Or, maybe i was a drunk IT consultant in Australia.

The mind is a terrible thing to lay waste ...

Question for self - "HTF do they manage to get a pressure of 2 million atmospheres?"

Actually, that's pretty easy. Feed EG brocolli and beans, with a few eggs for good measure, point his head north. Shove the metal sample up the south end and stuff in a high grade cork. That should generate about 2 million atmospheres in short order.

:paranoid1: :toiletsmiley:

I looked up the research paper with my university account, and it seems that a diamond-anvil cell was used.
