Daniel Domscheit-Berg -- reportedly the former number two chief at Wikileaks -- took a treasure trove of confidential documents with him during his split with the site and ended up destroying them to prevent harming the "whistleblowers" involved.

Mr. Domscheit-Berg always took more of a cautious approach than Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. He emphasized that the site must protect whistleblowers if it was to have integrity. He accuses Mr. Assange of pushing a publish first, ask questions later mindset.

When it comes to the 3,500 documents in question, Mr. Domscheit-Berg and his supporters took them in his waning days with the site and after analyzing them "in the last days shredded [the files] to ensure that the sources are not compromised."
