Sun to Release First Open Source Java Code in October

Postby J_K9 » Fri Aug 18, 2006 6:14 pm

Sun has made good on its promise in May to release Java source code under an open source license. Now the company has launched a special Web site -- Open Sourcing the JDK -- where developers can help determine the license under which the code will be released.

Sun Microsystems plans to publish the first open source about Java code by October this year, the company has revealed.

Laurie Tolson, vice president of developer programs and products at Sun, said at a company event that the first components to be published include Java C and the Hotspot VM. The remainder of the code will be open sourced by the end of 2007.

Great news :D
