Tech question that can only belong in the bar...

OK The big round keyboard plug that is on older keyboards, what are they called. Not USB, Not PS2, but I'm thinking OS2 something like that....

Please help before I go out of my mind

I looked around and everything I saw points to a ' big round keyboard plug ' being a PS2

or are you thinking of this ( a DIN? )

It's an AT/XT keyboard connector. Which is, as Eg pointed out, a 5 pin DIN plug. The more modern keyboard/mouse plugs are PS/2 and use mini-DIN plugs.

Thanks...

I went to a 400 shop the other day and they have 5250 display terminals (Twin-X) and some of the keyboards were broken. I couldn't explain what type of connector they needed when I googled.

Man Am I getting old. I am one of the few that still understands how that shit works.

I think the network would be called a star network? Can't remember.

There are three types of connector used to connect a PC keyboard to the main system unit. All three are mechanically different from each other, but the first two are electrically identical (except for XT keyboards, which used a connector mechanically identical to the later AT connector, but not electrically compatible with it). The three connector types are listed below in chronological order:

5-pin DIN (DIN 41524) "AT" connector.
6-pin Mini-DIN (DIN 45322) "PS/2" connector.
4-pin USB connector.

all I could find too :(
and a STAR topology
JEEZ do they still use that anywhere
apart from Patriot missile sites natch :P :)

Well I thought we all use star topologies....when using a central switch\hub?? all though more probably hybrid as certain traffic is then routed out to other segments??

This is digging up stuff filed way back in the old brain ...almopst 20 years ago??

I went to a 400 shop the other day

Decent machine. Sold/installed alot of those back in the 80's.
...but all that function key stuff in the user interface...
...what a pain in the neck... I was in a 400 shop a few years ago and I needed to write some queries.
Couldnt remember the PF key to reset the query. Frickin drove me to an early day at the bar.

Ended up using an ODBC connection from SQLServer. Much less painless than those frickin screens.

way back in the old brain ..

... token ring
... BR14
... superwylber
... 300 baud
... dropping my box of punch cards while getting off the bus in the snow.

OK, that's enough... my head hurts.... Bartender!!!!
