hi there,

i'm a newbie, and i'm interested in getting a compatible wireless card (or using what i have) to crack WEP wireless.

I read the "tutorial: is my wireless card compatible?"
and this is what i have:

The operating system i have is windows xp, but i plan to run the live linux cd.
my preferred hardware format: i don't care, but i'd like to use the intel that i already have in my laptop.
and which features do i require: (listening or injection)... what is the difference? because it says that in windows you can only listen. i just want to search the web.

The wireless card i'm using is:
IntelPro/Wireless 2200BG, I looked up the Chipset: IPW2200 & it works with linux
The driver is ipw2200, and is a bit tricky because you have to do a couple separate things to assemble this driver....
So can i use my current wireless card and run the linux live cd and use backtrack3 to crack the WEP?

any help is appreciated
-kitty

OK, to _use_ WEP wireless, or to _hack_ WEP wireless? If you want to browse the web with a secure wireless, you want WPA. XP and up supports that.

If you want to hack WEP, yeah, you are probably heading down the right road.

thanks, i'm trying to crack a wep network.. so if i want to use my current intelpro/wireless 2200BG card that uses chipset IPW2200 & works with linux
I could run the live linux cd and use backtrack3 to start the crack WEP process?

I've also heard that the intelpro/wireless 2200BG does not have both listening and injecting, so i'm considering the alfa AWUS036H....and running ubuntu and then the aero..

am i headed down the right path????

Probably the simplest approach. Backtrack2 and 3 work with just about any wireless (internal and external) card and makes the process pretty straightforward. Not that it is all that difficult in the first place. WEP has been very hackable for a very long time.

Of course, I'm not going to tell you that what you want to do is right, moral or legal. You stand the risk of breaking local or regional laws in this activity if you don't have specific, written permission with full knowledge of the network owner to perform a pentest against a WEP environment. Even then, you risk civil liability.

Anyone who uses WEP to defend their wireless network today is ignorant, miss-informed or just plain stupid (or listening to the idiot Best Buy techs). However, that does not mean they deserve to be hacked and that anyone has a right to use their network as a learning ground for hacking WEP.

Using someone else's wireless network to access their broadband is theft. Pure and simple. No different than some big dude walking up to you and taking your laptop away from you simply because he intimidates you enough that you won't resist. It is theft. Don't try to rationalize it any other way. The law doesn't and the prosecutor who will try your case doesn't.

Just so you know.
