Are you Middle-Class?

Postby Egaladeist » Mon Jun 23, 2008 4:16 am

Are we really better off than our parents or their parents?

The traditional breakdown is, and has always been...in any given month...

1 quarter of your monthly income pays for housing ( rent, mortgage, etc... )

1 quarter of your monthly income pays for bills ( gas, electric, phone, transportation, homeowners insurance, property taxes, life insurance, healthcare etc...you can include modern conveniences in here too like cable, internet, etc...)

1 quarter of your monthly income goes into savings ( bank, bonds, annuities, stock, retirement plans, investments, etc... )

and...

1 quarter of your monthly income is traditionally considered residual income...spending money...for clothes, shoes, pizza, beer, new tires, stereo, canoe, or whatever floats your boat...

how many here meet the above requirement to be considered ' traditionally ' middle-class?

No need to comment or tell anyone where you fit in...just cast yer vote.

I doubt you will find many that would come close to applying that model.. ..

That model would imply that typical Middle Class couples.. could go on a months 'Unpaid Leave" after a year plus be on 2 months "unpaid" sick leave.. and not really suffer financially....

True...but that is/was the standard...to determine where you fell...

wealthy...rich
financially comfortable...very well off but not rich
upper-middle-class
middle-class
lower middle-class
financially uncomfortable...not poor but knocking on it's door
poor

I guess the above standard today would likely apply mostly to the upper middle-class...

but 40 years ago in Canada it was middle-class...even lower middle-class in Canada 40 years ago a one-income household could own their home, have two cars, etc...

Are we better off today than say 40 years ago?

I thought the 'class' thing was a British anachronism.
Didn't know you N. Americans did it too.

A quarter of my take home pay into savings wahahaha.

It costs nearly £70 to fill the tank of my car now and that lasts a week.

Money for food whahahaha
Crazy Canadian.

I pay about half my take home as tax if you count Vat/duty. Even if you don't our Great Cycloptic Leader - Herr Brown still takes about 25%.

Income in Holland is measured as "modaal" or what the average Joe makes.

I measure about 1.5 times that..

According to your split everybody will probably fall in that category as most pay about half of their salary for housing (incl. gas, electra etc).
My apartment is just more expensive then what the average Joe can afford.

I used to be Feckin RICH AS HELL.

Paid $400 rent $150 utilities per month
Maybe $200 per year in insurance (Car Renters)

So that's like $6,800 housing and car
Don't ever remember going to a grocery store so lets say $400 a week Food Gas booze what's that...
$19,200

So all together were at $26,000 a year to live. No credit card debt, no car payment.

THEN IT HAPPENED.

House, Minivan, dog 2.3 kids - wife (non stepford type)

Just checked and I have 3 quarters a 5 and 2 1's in my pocket. I'm thinking lunch money for the rest of the month.

What's my point? It's all relative.

My mortgage is over quarter of a million dollars. Quite scary when you say it like that :(

I was loaded, and could have continued to be...but then I moved and began attending college.

Economically I am poor but secure and reasonably able, so...decidely underclass.

Considering that my education is what drains 70% of my income....my SocioEconomic status is quite high.

I should go to the bank, slam down my billion, shout "have a look at my massive wad" and offer to buy the managers house.

You lot going to break me out the loony-bin if I do?
