Israel and US row on settlements

Postby Egaladeist » Sat Sep 19, 2009 1:47 pm

Senior Israeli and the US officials have disagreed in public over Israeli settlement building in the West Bank.

On a visit to Washington, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said again that Israel could not accept a complete freeze on settlements.

Standing next to him, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reiterated that the US wanted a complete halt.

She went on to say that Israeli leaders had often in the past staked out positions that had changed over time.

"We want to see a stop to the settlements. We think that is an important and essential part of pursuing the efforts leading to a comprehensive peace agreement and the creation of a Palestinian state next to an Israeli Jewish state that is secure in its borders," Mrs Clinton said.

Mr Lieberman insisted that "natural growth" - settlement construction with in the boundaries of existing settlements - would continue despite specific US calls for this to end.

This was dam sure to happen as you can not force the self developed country whether you are world power or not. Ultimately Israel received the second round of guarantees while the Bush/Baker policy of confrontation opened a front for Bill Clinton who campaigned for a more pro-Israel policy. Perhaps, in lieu of loan guarantees, the US will link settlements to Iran, restricting Israel with one hand while freeing restraints with the other.

Yanno, this kind of shiite really pisses me off.

Israel is the nation that the west created shortly after WWII by allocating lands that were formerly Palestine for the Jews. They are our strongest, most loyal ally in the eastern Med, and constantly I hear how Comerade Presidente is shunning them over this, that, or the other freakin thing.

It seems the Obama regime is all about crapping on our only repeat ONLY friend east of Turkey and sucking up to the same culture that produced all of those wonderful car-bombing, airplane crashing, and subway nerve gassing terrorist organizations. Is he a chickenshit, or just a fool? Personally I believe option 2.

It's not just Israel (sorry for the thread jack) but Obama and Clinton have pissed off the UK over the Falklands.....The UK is America's staunchest ally in Iraq and Afghanistan (so are we in Afghanistan)....not nice, if I were the Brits I would pull out of Afghanistan and tell the US to do it alone...a little quid pro pro would be nice now and then from fair weather allies, unless of course Obama and the War generals in the Pentagon are secretly drawing up plans to invade Venezuela and Argentina while they are at it....
