Cherokee Nation Votes to Expel Slaves' Descendants

The commission, set up by a Congress bent on breaking up Indians' collective lands and parceling them out to tribal citizens, drew up two rolls, one listing Cherokees by blood and the other listing freedmen, a roll of blacks regardless of whether they had Indian blood.

Some opponents of the ballot question argued that attempts to remove freedmen from the tribe were motivated by racism.

Tribal officials said the vote was a matter of self-determination.

I read about that, although it seems to me people are missing the real motivation. Race has nothing to do with it. It's all about money. The less tribal members you have, the greater each person's percentage of the White Devil's cheque they get to pass around.

I agree...the motivation is greed...so they choose to eliminate those who they saw as ' impure blood '...or who had less ' pure blood '...
does raise an interesting question though ...if, for example, the Kennedy's found out that ' X ' siblings/cousins had ' impure blood ' , the product of a slave past, or infidelity, could they use this as a precedence to oust them from any inheritance? ;)

Hmm... impure blood...

Sounds like ethnic cleansing to me.

Truth tho - freedmen were not nor had ever been Indians - they were Africans shipped here for slavery. Should it fall to the Cherokee Nation to make financial amends for the US Government's most heinous mistake in allowing slave trade?

No...I think you misunderstood Ice...the Indians had slaves too...black and white and Indian slaves...like in many parts of Africa they often traded in slaves...they are referring to their slaves...or rather the descendants of their slaves....

slavery isn't a predominately white occupation...we are just criticized more for it because we were supposed to have been more ' civilized ' than the so-called savages our ancestors enslaved...

had we roamed around in canoes carved out of trees instead of in tall ships and Schooners, and wore animal hides instead of silk and cotton, and hunted with spears instead of rifles, and lived in adobe or animal hide shacks instead of brick and stone buildings...

then everyone would look the other way with us too

I am appalled by the inhumanity of slavery...but...I don't share the popular opinion and slant of history that wants to paint the white man as the devil who traded in slaves...slavery has been an occupation of every race...and every race has it's ghosts in that respect. ;)

We were just more proficient at it than anyone else...like most things...we excelled at it like we excelled at building cities, ships, trading, finance, etc...and as a result of our capitalistic success we are being held more accountable...to a higher moral standard...

any time you excel with the good...you equally excel with the bad....materialistic success, wealth, an industrious nature, etc... doesn't equate to moral superiority... ;)

we should not be held to a higher standard just because we were more progressive...just because our ancestors danced in huge ballrooms in castles wearing silkcloth instead of outside around a fire in animal skins...being wealthy, or wealthier, does not mean our moral standards were elevated.
