I need a new stand alone sql server. This is what I emailed my preferred hardware vendor:

Quote:
I need a new SQL server.

Here is what I am thinking.

64 bit
single, quad core, Intel processor. (let me know what a dual quad costs, but I doubt the company will pay for a dual processor SQL License.
Tons and Tons of RAM

HP is Preferred. I will install the latest Windows OS and SQL 2008.

Here is where your hardware people come in.

I want the database(s) to be on the physical server - not a SAN or any other attached array.
I want the fastest disks (read/write)
I would prefer 4 separate raid arrays on the server.
I am leaning on virtualizing the SQL installs and giving each database their own physically dedicated array. Actually I don't know if I'm going to want one or two SQL instances yet. But I still need a KILLER SQL server. No failover needed.

Also, the server should be smaller than a bread box and have the option of dispensing tea during noon meetings. Oh and if you have one in a pleasant, light blue, that would be lovely!

Now three of the databases are the back end for inhouse asp applications (not a ton of read writes) the other two - different server, are crazy read write animals. one transaction can fill an entire tracelog.

So high impact databases on the same server as low impact, what do we us's think?

I have always heard that the optimal setup would be

OS and Sql logs on a mirrored set

Databases on on a striped set

not sure how that works in a virtualized world....

and use sas drives.....
