Cartoons

Postby Aspman » Mon Feb 06, 2006 1:47 pm

You'll all know about the Danish cartoons and the reaction from some of the muslim populations around the globe so I'll not detail that.

But I just saw this belting quote on the Beeb:

"They want to test our feelings," protester Mawli Abdul Qahar Abu Israra told the BBC.

"They want to know whether Muslims are extremists or not. Death to them and to their newspapers," he said.

Just answered his own question there then!

I just have one question. If it's illegal to show a picture of mohamad, how do they know the cartoons are a correct likness?

Ermm....death to you for raising a theological issue, burn the infidel dino.

(it's not illegal, it's not even in the Koran. Something to do with preventing the worship of idols of mohamad rather than the worship of Allah, Christians are also not suppost to picture Christ, but the marketing opportunities for religious tat were too good to pass up and the church loves a bit of cash).

I've yet to see the 'no pics of Christ' written anywhere either, but hey, good Christians know to worship God as Christ, not his image.

Get your butt in chat Scottish boyo, I finally made it in there!

Altough I ovbiously think this reaction is totally stupid, especially what I read about libanon where they just trashed everything because they couldn't find the swedish embasy bringing them right back to where they were 15 (or something) years ago with them civil war.

But, don't think this is a muslim-only thing. I know there's enough christian fanatics in the US that would break out their anti-tank weapons if a similar thing happened with an offensive cartoon of christ in a muslim country. Hell they already do that when you throw a US flag in the mud.

Does anyone know what exactly was offensive about the cartoons? A friend of mine said something that a bunch of people with bombsstrapped to them in front of the heavens gates and Mohammed asking why they weren't ollwed in and the Petrus saying they were out of virgins or something. That correct? So is the reason for the anger really that Mohammed is drawn, while according to muslim beliefs being "just" the prophet he is not to be drawn because he's not important?

yeah Kwiep you got it on one. Any image of the prophet is offensive but not because it's in the Koran but because of an interpretation hundreds of years ago. The fact the images are satirical cartoons makes it extra offensive.

I've no problem with Muslims protesting against the images and being 'outraged' by them but inciting murder over them takes it too far by a long way.

--Couldn't get chat to work at home either, in FF or IE. Installing the latest java runtime to see if that does the trick.

--Yey it works, no one there but it works.
