Gives new perspective to "FlyGuy" stating "Bitch betta have my money!"
Republican Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa is hoping to stamp out the sex trade by taxing pimps and prostitutes, then jailing them when they don't pay.
Carol Leigh, a representative of the Bay Area Sex Worker Advocacy Network in San Francisco, California, called the proposal short-sighted.

Short-sighted, yes, that's one phrase for it... I wonder if any of our female members have something to say about this? How about the complete wash over the status of women being objectified? I know some have volunteered for that life, but this politician makes me want to... wait, wait, wait - I would like to read if any of our exclusive female members have something to write about this. I thought I was just sleep deprived when I first read that article.

How do you figure? If your concerned about objectification, focus on media and marketing companies. Prostitution is a symptom, not a cause of objectification.

The point of this law would seem to be focused on allowing law enforcement to trump up more charges against pimps... which is good because it moves the focus away from the prostitutes, many of whom are junkies, etc and are themselves victimized by the pimps.

Yeah, the law is stupid, but I think its heart is in the right place.

The only sensible way to deal with pimps and prostitutes is to licence it...here in Canada it is a known fact that massage parlors and Escort services are decriminialized zones for prostitution...
it's accepted as a way to get them off the street corners and into semi-legitimate business where they do pay taxes and have to account for income ( at least as much as any other business does ;) )...
licencing also allows for other agencies ( eg. health services ) to ensure public safety....to an extent.
Criminalization and the threat of incarceration never has/never will solve anything..it's only caused more problems, less regulation, and more cost to the tax-payer.

Eg ;)

Killing people isn't always the answer. :) I mean, c'mon, they aren't killing anyone else (except by maybe spreading disease). Not that I'm a fan of prostitution, but I'm far, far less of a fan of just shooting them.

Sometimes the light's all shining on me, other times I can barely see. Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it's been.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I'd be tempted to say that killing people is rarely the answer - except, possibly, when you have a corrupt Prime/Chief Minister/President/{insert figure} destroying your country ;)
